Sometimes life gets overwhelming even when we are not dealing with trauma. But for those of us who are, what is the one thing you always use to keep the insanity at bay? Doesn't mean it always works but it is the first step!
Mine is a deep - soul deep sigh! I can do it anywhere and anytime I need it. I can use it multiple times a day and it's absolutely free. Heck I did it while writing this post! To calm my sympathetic nervous system, I breath in until I my lungs are bursting, I hold it for a moment and then let it rush out of my body while I try to relax all my muscles.
I discovered awhile back that I have a tendency to hold my breath when in distress and I tighten all the muscles in my body. So this sigh reminds me to consciously take control of my nervous system. Sometimes it's all I need to push the thoughts away. Other times it's what I do before I open a bottle of Snoop Dogg/19 crimes wine (this is a surprisingly good red wine and they're not even paying me to say that damn it).
So what is your first step? I think the more tools in our toolbox the better at coping with all that life throws at us the better!
